The St John Hospice Antigua is a charitable not for profit organization based in Antigua. We are under the Auspices of a worldwide organization The St. John Association dating back many years and we are able to provide a number of services to the people of Antigua.
We currently offer Hospice service which provides in home palliative care for the terminally ill. We are able to offer medication, dressings and other consumable items together with around the clock nursing care. We also help with the rental of hospital beds, walkers, wheelchairs, commodes etc. for home care.
The ultimate goal with this service is to make the final days of a terminally ill patient as comfortable as possible together with helping their family members cope with the stress of caring and the inevitable loss.
In January 2012, the St. John Hospice Antigua opened its doors operating from Gwenneth O’Rilley Ward at Holberton Hospital. This facility offers palliative care to those who are terminally ill and require 24 hour round the clock care. There are 9 beds for the terminally ill and 2 respite-bed care rooms for families in need of short term assistance. There is a minimal charge for this service.
We have a growing number of volunteers who give up their time to help us with providing the services that we offer.
We have two thrift shops. Fashion Encore, the thrift shop on Bishopgate Street, which is now in its 10th year of operation and continues to be the backbone of our fund raising efforts and provides one fitth of our annual operating costs. The other thrift shop, Fashion Encore 2, is located at the Hospice.
It is the proceeds from these shops that help pay our working staff of 16 nurses and aids. Donations of clothing, house hold items and books are always welcome and these can be taken to the shops or if necessary, be collected. Donated items should be new or almost new in condition.
